In this course, the learner will gain knowledge of the bowel and bladder issues that can plague the neurologically involved child. Common diagnoses discussed include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, and autism spectrum disorders. Participants will be able to understand how each of these neurologic issues affects the bowel, bladder, and toilet training. Treatment including exercise strategies, education, and equipment will be discussed. At the end of the course, participants should be able to set realistic expectations for continence for their patients. They will also be able to assess for further equipment needs and positioning strategies for their nonambulatory patients. Participants will have a greater understanding of the bowel and bladder needs for this special population and should be able to create treatment plans to address these issues.
This course is appropriate for PTs, OTs, and RNs treating children in an acute or outpatient environment.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Bowel and Bladder Dysfunction in the Neurologically Involved Child
In this chapter, participants will learn the common bowel and bladder issues experienced by children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, and autism. Explanations for how these issues are different from those of the typically developing child will be explored.
2. Toilet Training and Treatment
In this chapter, participants will learn how to set appropriate expectations for parents when it comes to continence in the neurologically involved child. The learner will have strategies for improving toilet training with children and providing proper education for the parents.
3. Equipment
In this chapter, the learner will discover some of the equipment available to parents to help with toileting in the neurologically involved child. Therapists will learn the basics of evaluating for this equipment and the proper practitioners to refer to in order to procure it.
